It's been a long time, but I've read all the Solzhenitsyn books aforementioned. All were riveting reads.

As to Applebaum's book, if I recall correctly, it is in the historical format but not nearly as engrossing.

I hardly think that Soviet files can be relied upon for accuracy.

He came in 1953 and wasn't able to come into power until we were disengaging from Vietnam.
He took control of Cambodia in 1975. I will give you the fact that America's incursions cost Prince Sihanouk his popularity and helped destabilize the country.
Still, America and the French before them at least slowed his rise to power.

But I've no dog in the fight, other than to say, AS's depictions in "Cancer Ward" were spot-on.... and his "A Day in the Life" was mesmerizing. I found "Gulag" a little too long for may taste, but then, AS had to keep his notes hidden for many years in a place where he wouldn't be searched.... so I am rather surprised at its' length.

Where did Applebaum get her material? The Soviet archive? I guess there is room for a little more papaer in THAT storage facility. LOL!

You certainly can beat it Farmer. It has value in it's description of life in some camps but it does not have the historical accuracy of Applebaum's work.

Solzhenitsyn was a funny guy. He wanted a return of czarist government and really bought into the idea that the Russian nation would only come into ascension through the suffering of the Russian people. The theme is consistent in Russian thought even before Dostoevsky.

I am suggesting you don't try to go toe to toe with a Ukrainian whose living relatives tunneled off the Gulag on this one farmer.

Solzhenitsyn is instructive and certainly of more value than the laughable Black Book but you demonstrate how easily he leads to a shallow interpretation of a complex history.

You dissapoint me. I know you aren't one of the Beamish types who watches military clips on the History Channel while he plesures himself. I expect more depth from you.

But ... I thought I was clear. Maybe I'm getting to old for this shit. Soviet communism - responsible for up to 40 million deaths in the 20th century... from the following methods:

starvation of Ukrainians (as one of the methods)
to the pogroms (as another of the methods)
and gulags of the 50s and 60s (as another of the methods)

I never claimed any ONE of those methods was responsible for all 40 million deaths.

Pol Pot and the Khmer Roug came to power as a communist government trying to establish a utopian society that ended up killing well over 2 million Cambodians. Blaming that on the US is ridiculous. Pol Pot was originally a member of the French Communist Party. He started a Communist led revolt in 1953 in Cambodia, long before United States was even in Southeast Asia.

mussolini, I suggest you pick up Ann Applebaum's book "Gulag: A History".

She's an excellent writer and the first to produce a book from research of the recently opened Soviet archives. Really an outstanding book.

Claiming that Soviet deaths from executions or imprisonment were 25 - 60 million during the 50's and 60's at a time when Khrushchev was trying to undo the madness is at odds with any scholarly work on the subject. Pick up the book ... it's probably the best out there.

There will be a few reactionary buttcracks who interpret this as some defense of Papa Joe's insane forced labor system. So be it. I present it only because you seem interested in scholarship.
