I'm More Than a Little Offended Myself
The other day, unannounced, Yasser stopped by my house to discuss a real-estate matter. I had no idea that he was going to stop by, but the fact that he did so shouldn't matter.
As is my custom when getting ready to head out in the convertible under what I now call "A September 11 sky," I had donned one of my caps. The one I was wearing shows an embroided image of the Twin Towers and reads "Ground Zero, 9.11.01."
Yasser and I tended to business, and he went on his way. Then, as I was getting ready to dash out the door, I glanced in the mirror and realized that he had seen my cap. Oh, well...
Just to test the waters of political correctness, every client whom I saw later in the afternoon heard my story of Yasser and my cap. The reaction from each client, each one an American, was a gasp, as if to say, "You've committed a faux pas!" [To be fair, one of my clients saw some humor in the situation.] The gist of the words actually spoken: "Do you think you offended him?"
Now, in and of itself, the story of Yasser and my cap is not a significant occurrence. But the reactions ARE. My observations:
1. I'll wear what I please, particularly in my house and in my car.
2. If Yasser is a moderate, my cap shouldn't have offended him.
3. If Yasser is a supporter of the jihadists who killed some 3,000 innocent Americans here on our home soil, he needs to leave the United States--and the sooner, the better.
The travesty of 9/11 did a lot more than offend me. It enraged me and opened my eyes to the truth!

I think that it is a non issue, Warren. It is our country and 9-11 is our issue. We are free to express our feelings about that issue any way we please.
Big Bubba,
Not quite sure why you addressed your comment to Warren.
I think the issue is that my clients seem preoccupied with not giving offense. The clients also assumed that Yasser might take offense. Hmmm...
Lets go over some unpleasant facts
companies are PC. Therefore they cater to certain groups.
The day the Cole was bombed a coworker came to my desk and started to celebrate. He took the American flag out of my pencil holder and placed it on my desk.
I glared at him an this was his exact words. "What do you care there are no Jews in the Navy ?"
The Personel rep ordered me off my floor to calm down. He knew that my Brother and Sister in law are career Naval officers and Jews.
My assistant manager wanted to know why I was ordered to take a break. He heard the statement and was ordered off the floor as well.
He was a Naval Veteran with combat experience.
When the personel rep had calmed me down. I went back the Coworker was getting his tail whipped from a Peruvian truckdriver. He was angry because people like that give immigrants a bad name. Guess who got in trouble for that I did.
He did get fired not for insulting
Jews,Christians and Americans. He got fired for making a cattle call
behind a 500lb woman.
Go figure.
The Peruvian was 5' and about 100lb
and he beat the tar out of a 6' 180lb Jordanian.
You are absolutely correct that companies are PC. Makes me glad that I am self-employed because I don't have to cater to any company policy.
My work situation is one of individual service provided in my clients' homes. Even in their homes, these people are spouting PC. PC = brainwashing, of course.
When we have to be PC in our own homes, things are way out of kilter.
Back to your situation on the day of the Cole bombing...Your coworker was rude, inconsiderate, and way out of line. And it DOES figure that his assinine behavior toward you did not result in dismissal.
For my own part, I try not to be rude to others. Or at least I USED to.
The irony is that he made Holocaust Jokes in front of the personal rep. I was ordered to walk away. Had I responded I would have been terminated.
The explanation was that I was supposed to be culturaly aware of his heritage and as an educated man expected to walk away.
I did get in troble for that fight.
How I or the assistant manager were responsible when we were ordered to walk off the floor is debateable. In the end it was my intervention and that of the assistant Manager who prevented a lynch mob from further violence.
Apparently the statements upset regular Americans including Poles,Blacks and Cubans.
Yet this was ignored in an attempt to be PC and the assistant Manager
and myself had to explain what happened. We were told as managers it was our duty to defuse the situations. The employee was never
admonished for his behavior.
beakerkin,
Your recent comments make me glad that I'm self-employed. I revel in my lack of PC, and any clients who don't care for my opinions can take a hike. And what has amazed me is that one of my clients is grateful to find someone else who "gets it," particulary with regard to the whitewash of Islam. His opinion: We'll have another attack, nuclear in nature, at which point eyes will open. I'm not so sure about those eyes. If 9/11 didn't wake people up, what will?
In your last comment, you mentioned that YOU were supposed to be culturally aware. Isn't it maddening that the door doesn't swing both ways?
PC is suicidal. Reference the recent comments from Condi Rice, pandering to Islamists. Who speaks out when the Bible is flushed? Oh no, we have to be understanding enough to accept the denigration of Western culture while others slam us.
I am not a Jew (as you've probably guessed from the above), but I can't imagine ANYONE telling Holocaust jokes in your presence. I wouldn't tell Yasser some ethnic jokes which I know--out of what my mother used to call "common courtesy."
The leftists' unspoken and denied modus operandi is tolerance for anyone who agrees with them, right? The sign of a small mind, as far as I'm concerned. Of course, we conservaties are the ones which the leftists label 'provincial' and 'small-minded'.
Very interesting that only certain groups have to grow a thicker skin. Double standard, as usual.
