Iran's Obstinacy

I spotted the following, dated July 8, 2006, over at CUANAS::
"TEHRAN (AFP) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called on Islamic countries to mobilise against Israel and 'remove' the 'Zionist regime'.

"'The basic problem in the Islamic world is the existence of the Zionist regime, and the Islamic world and the region must mobilise to remove this problem,' the president said in a speech to regional officials....

"He also issued an ominous warning to Western powers....

"'The waves of fury of Muslim nations will not be confined within the boundaries of the region, and the people who close their ears to the cries of the Palestinians and blindly support this regime will be responsible for the consequences,' he warned...."
Empty threats? Maybe. But consider this:
"The U.S. intelligence community has not been surprised by Iran's refusal to respond to a Western incentive package to suspend its uranium enrichment. Intelligence sources said Iran, following North Korea's model, intends to delay any response or negotiations for as long as possible.

"The European Union and the United States demanded that Iran reply to the Western incentive package of nuclear technology, fuel and aircraft by June 29. But Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said Teheran would submit an answer by Aug. 22.

"The U.S. intelligence community has been trying to figure out why Ahmadinejad chose that date. Sources said the community was stumped until some Islam experts translated the Gregorian date to that of the Muslim calendar.

"Then came the surprise that has the intelligence community worried.

"Aug. 22 corresponds to Rajab 27 on the Muslim calendar. The date is called Lailat Al Israa, when Mohammed ascended to heaven from the Al Aqsa mosque to receive the five daily prayers. Later, Al Aqsa came to represent Jerusalem.

"The Muslim commemoration is meant to be a night of struggle, accompanied by thunder and lightening, resembling the story of Moses ascending Mount Sinai to receive the Old Testament.

"Ahmadinejad could be hinting to the West that he is preparing a major attack on Israel. Or, the Iranian president could be warning that unless the West caves in, he would escalate tension in the region. The lightening in Mohammed's story could represent Iranian missiles.

"What is clear is that Ahmadinejad does not see himself as an Iranian leader, but a Muslim prophet, using imagery to portray himself as a messiah for both Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims."
I don't know where Epaminondas got his information, but if he is correct, there is big trouble on the way. There's Something About Islam posted the following information on July 12, 2006:
"Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has rejected Western demands that he respond to a new proposal regarding the cessation of Iran’s nuclear efforts by the middle of this month.

"To the consternation of officials in Europe and Washington, Ahmadinejad promised only to respond by the end of the Iranian month of Mordad (August 22).

"Why that date? Why so long to look over a simple package of incentives and give either a negative or a positive reply? Finding the answers to these troubling questions may require America and Europe to come to terms with a reality Western liberalism has done its best to ignore - that Islam remains engaged in a clash of civilizations with the Judeo-Christian world.

"You see, Ahmadinejad is a strong believer in the Shi’ite tradition of a 12th imam, the so-called 'hidden' Imam Mahdi who Allah has miraculously kept alive since his disappearance in 874 AD. As the story goes, Imam Mahdi will return at a time of great global chaos, oppression and bloodshed and usher in an era of (Islamic) justice.

"Ahmadinejad sees himself as Allah’s instrument to pave the way for Imam Mahdi, and constantly uses public appearances to urge his countrymen to prepare to back him in this task.

"Rumor is, Imam Mahdi could be returning this August (or shortly thereafter), just around the time some military experts believe Iran will be ready to construct its first nuclear weapon...
You can read the entire article here.

As a rule, I'm not keen on predictions based on specific dates, but as Mark Twain once noted:
"Apparently there is nothing that cannot happen today."

Given the Iranian president's remarks to date, his position of authority among terrorists as far back as Carter's badly mishandled hostage crisis and the information posted above, I would not even begin to take this lightly. They may be expecting to have nukes up and ready by then, or to mobilize in an all out war with Israel.

But Mahmoud is, at best, a scary character. The people some Muslim countries call "leaders" would be called "inmates" in a civilized culture.

One tiny correction,

Serious scholars believe that Mohammad ascended from the mosque in Medina, not Al Aqsa!!

The Al Aqsa myth was propagated by Haj Amin al-Huseini to try and activate Moslems to fight Jewish immigration. This was picked up and spread primarily by radical Imams and Islamofascists to cause trouble!!!

The actual passage in the Quran refers to Al Aqsa which translates literally to "most distant mosque". As there were Mosques in Turkey at the time, but Al Aqsa in Jerusalem hadn't been built yet, selecting Al Aqsa over Medina just because of distance would be pretty silly.

Here is an interesting discussion if it: http://www.wordofmessiah.org/al_aqsa_not.htm

Seth,
You're right: Ahmadinejad should not be taken lightly.

As I mentioned in my commentary in the blog article, I'm very skeptical about doomsday dates, particularly month, day, and year.

You'll notice that I found the first blog article well before the war which has broken out in the past few days in the Middle East.

Anonymous,
Serious scholars believe that Mohammad ascended from the mosque in Medina, not Al Aqsa!!

I know that there has been some debate about that. But many Muslims are not "serious scholars"; rather, they follow the lead of their imams.

Iran and the radicals have been waitting for the trigger, I believe they are using Hamas and Hezbollah as diversionary tactics against Israel and the West! I'm afraid we're in it now, but Israel(for all her failings and disobedience) is still G*D's property, occupied by G*D's people. That is a very weighty factor in Israels corner. Lies cannot overcome The Truth and HE will break out for Israel, but it will be a very rough ride. The Chinese curse about living in interesting times is coming down. May we be faithful.
Good morning and G*D bless, in spite of the circumstances!

Dead on.

When you are driven by a belief in a religion that glorifies dying for your god, the decision to start throwing nuclear weapons to advance your ultimate goal is easy.

Wiping out the Palis with the Jews is a good trade off to them as they are just helping their co-religionists to become martyrs to the cause and go to their heaven while removing an abominable encroachment on their HOLY land.

Losing 3/4 or more of the Muslims scattered around the world is also a gain if 3 times that many of infidels are also wiped out!!!

Remember Islam is touted as the Religion of Peace by their adherents. Of course, philosopers from all groups tend to agree that there will be no peace on earth until we are all either DEAD or some god makes it so. Ahmadinejad is an Islamic religious demagogue who thinks he can promote this eventuality!!!

His desire to bring about this annihilation appears to be greatly underestimated.

From this source, quoting Reuters:

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday an Israeli strike on Syria would be considered an attack on the whole Islamic world that would bring a "fierce response", state television reported.

And this commentary on the above:

That means the dhimmi nations of Europe (which has been set against Israel for years as it is), with their large and restive Muslim populations, as well as the countries of the OIC.

Ahmadinejad may see this as his big chance to unite the Islamic world behind Iran, positioning the Shi'ite mullahocracy as the best candidate to lead the jihad against the Great Satan. Did he set Hizballah loose on Israel with particular virulence in recent weeks in order to provoke Israeli attacks against civilian targets -- which jihadists have for years tried to provoke from Israel by launching attacks from areas heavily populated by civilians? Perhaps he was hoping to unleash the full force of the world's dhimmi leftist media against Israel, and to shame Europe, if not America, into refusing to lift a finger in Israel's defense -- and/or to provoke Europe's Muslims into full-bore jihad against the dhimmi non-Muslim Europeans.

Perhaps we are witnessing an attempt to resurrect the Shi'ite Fatimid caliphate....

Iran IS attacking Israel, through its Hezbollah / Pasdaran proxies in Lebanon.

Israel, unfortunately, is currently under the self-inflicted disaster of having leftists in charge of national security and foreign policy.

Right now, as we speak, there's a smoke-filled room in Jerusalem where Israeli leftists are at each other's throats trying to decide between bombing empty buildings or giving artillery positions to Fatah in the West Bank.

I'm kidding, of course. The room is probably a no smoking area.

Nah. Leftists have never required drugs to come up with goofy ideas. But they will debate each other breathless to hammer out the most goofy idea possible.

This could go one of three ways:

1.) Concession - Israel's leftist government, inextricably wedded to the leftist principle of maximizing the threat to one's own fellow citizens, will determine which Jewish settlements in the West Bank will grant terrorists the best positions to strike Israel, and abandon them to terrorists (Gaza Pullout, part deux), or

2.) The Grozny Option - They "gotta do something" for the audience at home. Especially after bending over to get punked, and, gasp, getting punked. Israel will focus all of its firepower upon "destroying" something (up to a small city), with the same long term effect Russia's leveling of Grozny had on Chechen Muslim terrorism (i.e. nothing), or

3.) Both.

The best we can hope for is a collapse of Israel's experiment in stupidity and a right-wing government replacing it.

While there's still an Israel to govern.

Israeli Military Says Missile Struck Warship Instead of Drone

Saturday , July 15, 2006

BEIRUT, Lebanon — A missile fired by Hezbollah, not an unmanned drone laden with explosives, damaged an Israeli warship off Lebanon, the army said Saturday.

The attack on Friday night had raised widespread concern in the Israeli military because initial information indicated that the guerrillas had used a drone for the first time to attack Israeli forces.

But the army's investigation into the attack, which left four Israeli sailors missing, showed that Hezbollah had fired an Iranian-made missile at the vessel from the shores of Lebanon, said Brig. Gen. Ido Nehushtan.

"We can confirm that it was hit by an Iranian-made missile launched by Hezbollah. We see this as very profound fingerprint of Iranian involvement in Hezbollah," Nehushtan said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Another Hezbollah missile also hit and sank a nearby civilian merchant ship at around the same time, Nehushtan said. He said that ship apparently was Egyptian, but he had no other information about it....

Following those reams and reams of spam, I was called a particularly offensive epithet. So...comment moderation has been enabled.

Mind you, the spammer was one at whose blog I have never, ever posted a comment nor any spam.

Iran heavily invested in North Korean missile program

LONDON — Teheran has been financing Pyongyang's intermediate and ICBM programs for nearly a decade, Western intelligence sources said. The funding has been part of a deal in which North Korea would share missile technology and equipment with Iran.

"Anytime you hear of a North Korean success, translate that directly into an Iranian success," an intelligence source said. "You can be sure that within a few weeks, Iran will receive briefings, training and eventually production expertise from Pyongyang."

Iran is believed to have invested more than $1 billion in North Korean missile development...

I've corresponded with a few Iranian expatriates recently who claim that Mahmoodypants isn't that popular with the people in Iran. He has his radical followers of course, but like most people, the Iranian people don't want to be dragged into a war that will threaten their lives any more than anyone else. At any rate, it made me feel a bit better that people with relatives still in Iran hate the little bugger. He is a total loon though, and not someone I like seeing with that kind of weapons program.
