Saudi Textbooks

As I mentioned before, I'm overwhelmed right now. In fact, I'm not able even to read the daily paper from cover to cover. But thanks to an email heads-up from one of my homeschool parents, a new article about the matter of Saudi textbooks has been brought to my attention.

The following article, "This is a Saudi textbook (After the intolerance was removed.)," appeared in the May 21, 2006 edition of the Washington Post and is reproduced below in its entirety, with links enabled from the Washington Post web site:
Saudi Arabia's public schools have long been cited for demonizing the West as well as Christians, Jews and other "unbelievers." But after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 -- in which 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis -- that was all supposed to change.

A 2004 Saudi royal study group recognized the need for reform after finding that the kingdom's religious studies curriculum "encourages violence toward others, and misguides the pupils into believing that in order to safeguard their own religion, they must violently repress and even physically eliminate the 'other.' " Since then, the Saudi government has claimed repeatedly that it has revised its educational texts.

Prince Turki al-Faisal, the Saudi ambassador to the United States, has worked aggressively to spread this message. "The kingdom has reviewed all of its education practices and materials, and has removed any element that is inconsistent with the needs of a modern education," he said on a recent speaking tour to several U.S. cities. "Not only have we eliminated what might be perceived as intolerance from old textbooks that were in our system, we have implemented a comprehensive internal revision and modernization plan." The Saudi government even took out a full-page ad in the New Republic last December to tout its success at "having modernized our school curricula to better prepare our children for the challenges of tomorrow." A year ago, an embassy spokesman declared: "We have reviewed our educational curriculums. We have removed materials that are inciteful or intolerant towards people of other faiths." The embassy is also distributing a 74-page review on curriculum reform to show that the textbooks have been moderated.

The problem is: These claims are not true.

A review of a sample of official Saudi textbooks for Islamic studies used during the current academic year reveals that, despite the Saudi government's statements to the contrary, an ideology of hatred toward Christians and Jews and Muslims who do not follow Wahhabi doctrine remains in this area of the public school system. The texts teach a dualistic vision, dividing the world into true believers of Islam (the "monotheists") and unbelievers (the "polytheists" and "infidels").

This indoctrination begins in a first-grade text and is reinforced and expanded each year, culminating in a 12th-grade text instructing students that their religious obligation includes waging jihad against the infidel to "spread the faith."

Freedom House knows this because Ali al-Ahmed, a Saudi dissident who runs the Washington-based Institute for Gulf Affairs, gave us a dozen of the current, purportedly cleaned-up Saudi Ministry of Education religion textbooks. The copies he obtained were not provided by the government, but by teachers, administrators and families with children in Saudi schools, who slipped them out one by one.

Some of our sources are Shiites and Sunnis from non-Wahhabi traditions -- people condemned as "polytheistic" or "deviant" or "bad" in these texts -- others are simply frustrated that these books do so little to prepare young students for the modern world.

We then had the texts translated separately by two independent, fluent Arabic speakers.

Religion is the foundation of the Saudi state's political ideology; it is also a key area of Saudi education in which students are taught the interpretation of Islam known as Wahhabism (a movement founded 250 years ago by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab) that is reflected in these textbooks.

Scholars estimate that within the Saudi public school curriculum, Islamic studies make up a quarter to a third of students' weekly classroom hours in lower and middle school, plus several hours each week in high school. Educators who question or dissent from the official interpretation of Islam can face severe reprisals. In November 2005, a Saudi teacher who made positive statements about Jews and the New Testament was fired and sentenced to 750 lashes and a prison term. (He was eventually pardoned after public and international protests.)

The Saudi public school system totals 25,000 schools, educating about 5 million students. In addition, Saudi Arabia runs academies in 19 world capitals, including one outside Washington in Fairfax County, that use some of these same religious texts.

Saudi Arabia also distributes its religion texts worldwide to numerous Islamic schools and madrassas that it does not directly operate. Undeterred by Wahhabism's historically fringe status, Saudi Arabia is trying to assert itself as the world's authoritative voice on Islam -- a sort of "Vatican" for Islam, as several Saudi officials have stated-- and these textbooks are integral to this effort. As the report of the commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks observed, "Even in affluent countries, Saudi-funded Wahhabi schools are often the only Islamic schools" available.
Education is at the core of the debate over freedom in the Muslim world. Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden understands this well; in a recent audiotape he railed against those who would "interfere with school curricula."

The passages below -- drawn from the same set of Saudi texts proudly cited in the new 74-page review of curriculum reform now being distributed by the Saudi Embassy -- are shaping the views of the next generation of Saudis and Muslims worldwide. Unchanged, they will only harden and deepen hatred, intolerance and violence toward other faiths and cultures. Is this what Riyadh calls reform?

religion@freedomhouse.org

FIRST GRADE

" Every religion other than Islam is false."

"Fill in the blanks with the appropriate words (Islam, hellfire): Every religion other than ______________ is false. Whoever dies outside of Islam enters ____________."

FOURTH GRADE

"True belief means . . . that you hate the polytheists and infidels but do not treat them unjustly."

FIFTH GRADE

"Whoever obeys the Prophet and accepts the oneness of God cannot maintain a loyal friendship with those who oppose God and His Prophet, even if they are his closest relatives."

"It is forbidden for a Muslim to be a loyal friend to someone who does not believe in God and His Prophet, or someone who fights the religion of Islam."

"A Muslim, even if he lives far away, is your brother in religion. Someone who opposes God, even if he is your brother by family tie, is your enemy in religion."

SIXTH GRADE

"Just as Muslims were successful in the past when they came together in a sincere endeavor to evict the Christian crusaders from Palestine, so will the Arabs and Muslims emerge victorious, God willing, against the Jews and their allies if they stand together and fight a true jihad for God, for this is within God's power."

EIGHTH GRADE

"As cited in Ibn Abbas: The apes are Jews, the people of the Sabbath; while the swine are the Christians, the infidels of the communion of Jesus."

"God told His Prophet, Muhammad, about the Jews, who learned from parts of God's book [the Torah and the Gospels] that God alone is worthy of worship. Despite this, they espouse falsehood through idol-worship, soothsaying, and sorcery. In doing so, they obey the devil. They prefer the people of falsehood to the people of the truth out of envy and hostility. This earns them condemnation and is a warning to us not to do as they did."

"They are the Jews, whom God has cursed and with whom He is so angry that He will never again be satisfied [with them]."

"Some of the people of the Sabbath were punished by being turned into apes and swine. Some of them were made to worship the devil, and not God, through consecration, sacrifice, prayer, appeals for help, and other types of worship. Some of the Jews worship the devil. Likewise, some members of this nation worship the devil, and not God."

"Activity: The student writes a composition on the danger of imitating the infidels."

NINTH GRADE

"The clash between this [Muslim] community (umma) and the Jews and Christians has endured, and it will continue as long as God wills."

"It is part of God's wisdom that the struggle between the Muslim and the Jews should continue until the hour [of judgment]."

"Muslims will triumph because they are right. He who is right is always victorious, even if most people are against him."

TENTH GRADE

The 10th-grade text on jurisprudence teaches that life for non-Muslims (as well as women, and, by implication, slaves) is worth a fraction of that of a "free Muslim male." Blood money is retribution paid to the victim or the victim's heirs for murder or injury:

"Blood money for a free infidel. [Its quantity] is half of the blood money for a male Muslim, whether or not he is 'of the book' or not 'of the book' (such as a pagan, Zoroastrian, etc.).

"Blood money for a woman: Half of the blood money for a man, in accordance with his religion. The blood money for a Muslim woman is half of the blood money for a male Muslim, and the blood money for an infidel woman is half of the blood money for a male infidel."

ELEVENTH GRADE

"The greeting 'Peace be upon you' is specifically for believers. It cannot be said to others."

"If one comes to a place where there is a mixture of Muslims and infidels, one should offer a greeting intended for the Muslims."

"Do not yield to them [Christians and Jews] on a narrow road out of honor and respect."

TWELFTH GRADE

"Jihad in the path of God -- which consists of battling against unbelief, oppression, injustice, and those who perpetrate it -- is the summit of Islam. This religion arose through jihad and through jihad was its banner raised high. It is one of the noblest acts, which brings one closer to God, and one of the most magnificent acts of obedience to God."

This is the sort of information that should be read by every parent, every teacher, and every student. We ALL simply must be aware of what we are up against, and what we will face generation after generation after generation.

Outrageous - but then, we knew that!

Let's pass it on! I haven't been to Jihadwatch for the last few days, but it looks like something Spencer might publish, if he hasn't already...

I've already notified Robert Spencer. I'm way behind in keeping up with things right now, as I've previously explained, but my brain is working well enough to get the word out on a topic as important as this one.

Will Ibrahim Hooper of CAIR be making rounds to defend ISA? He usually does.

AOW

These quotes are hardly surprising and the left as usual glosses over this. No doubt the use of the N word in passing in Huck Finn has caused some schools to take the book out of its libraries. The Canterbury tales contain some strident anti Semitic content but I read tham in a Yeshiva.

The left is selective about what books to ban from libraries. I wonder if the same libraries that ban Huck Finn also ban the Emperor Jones. The N word is used twenty plus times in a role written for Commie traitor Paul Robeson.

Did you check the location of ISA? It's right here, a short distance from Washington, D.C. ISA graduated convicted aspiring Presidential assassin and anti-Semite Ahmed Abu Ali. Want to take a guess as to where he learned his hate? He didn't have to travel to Saudi to get his ideas.

My point: These Saudi textbooks are in use in Islamic schools all over the United States.

Well, having the info appear in the Sunday WaPo is a step in the right direction.

Nanc,
The material cited is used in public schools in Saudi Arabia and in certain private schools here in the United States. From the WaPo article: Saudi Arabia runs academies in 19 world capitals, including one outside Washington in Fairfax County, that use some of these same religious texts. According to some sources, the world maps on the walls of the Saudi-owned schools right here in the United States don't even show the existence of Israel? Such a map makes a clear statement, IMO, and predisposes the students to hating Israel.

There is also the matter of Susan Douglass, who has written for the Council on Islamic Education, which publishes a curriculum guide which has been used here in the United States, specifically in California and possible elsewhere. In fact, the CIE guide is present in the Fairfax County Public Library and in other public libraries as well. According to the guide, Muslim students must not be offended in our public schools. That sounds fine in theory, until one delves into the details.

Have you checked your children's social-studies books? Susan Douglass serves as curriculum advisor to most of the major publishers for American social-studies textbooks.

This material should be read by every concerned parent of schoolchildren here in the United States. Read it now! And every parent should check to see just what's going on in social studies classes. For example, in Herndon, VA, during Ramadan students in fifth grade were required to recite the five pillars of Islam; but according to Islam, once those words are uttered, one IS a Muslim, regardless of any rote or lack of understanding. And once Muslim, always Muslim--according to Islam. Remember the case of Abdul Rahman in Afghanistan?

I've seen some of the enrichment activities in the textbooks: role-playing ("Pretend you are a Palestinian who has lost his country. How do you feel?").

Be sure to read the link I've posted in this comment. Not to be missed!

Surely we can't say we are surprised, can we? We all know that Saudis (nay Muslims) are given to lying to defend and further their faith.

Hatred of infidels will continue in the Muslim world in general, and in Saudi Arabia in particular, for as long as Islam is thier religion, Allah, their god, and Muhammad, their prophet.

Officially, the king of Saudi Arabia is the Keeper of the Two Holy Mosques; so officially, he is also the head of the faith in the way that the Pope is the Head of the Roman Catholic faith. The difference is that many, many Muslims don't feel that the king of SA is the rightful Keeper of those Holy Mosques. As you know, the Al-Saud dynasty is criticized greatly among the very religious and devout for leading similar profligate lives as rich infidels. Therefore, they hardly command much respect.

Ironically, the devout Wahhabis have kept, and are still keeping, the Saudi Royal Family in power. There's an unwritten agreement between them and the king: an 'I'll scratch your back if you'll scratch mine' sort of deal.

Knowing this, it is hardly likely that much will change in their education system.

In any case, as we all know, Islam is, by definition, supremacist and élitist.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose!

Now, there's something we don't hear in the msm!

And in my mind's eye, I keep seeing GWB's greeting to the Saudi prince last summer at the Crawford Ranch. Paying homage to oil?

Hatred of infidels will continue in the Muslim world in general, and in Saudi Arabia in particular, for as long as Islam is thier religion, Allah, their god, and Muhammad, their prophet.

Too many just don't understand the differences between the Meccan and the Medinan verses. The former are quoted over and over again by Islamophiles and apologists, but the Medinan verses were the later "revelation." Not enough were converting, so MTP changed his tune and tone.

Mark, I wish that more people would read your book, which really lays out what Islam is! The essay format is reader-friendly, and you use the Koran itself to make your points.

And, of course, Saudi has deep pockets and extends curricular influence in madrassahs around the world--as well as in numerous mosques, particularly those built since 1990. Quite a proliferation of such mosques.

The most primeval, hate inciting book is the Holy Quran itself.

[2.63] And when We took a promise from you and lifted the mountain over you: Take hold of the law (Tavrat) We have given you with firmness and bear in mind what is in it, so that you may guard (against evil).
[2.64] Then you turned back after that; so were it not for the grace of Allah and His mercy on you, you would certainly have been among the losers.
[2.65] And certainly you have known those among you who exceeded the limits of the Sabbath, so We said to them: Be (as) apes, despised and hated.
[2.66] So We made them an example to those who witnessed it and those who came after it, and an admonition to those who guard (against evil).

(BTW Jews are children of apes and Christians are children if swine – sometimes people get confuse about it).
The rest is just a logical consequence of it and it is not just the Saudis who are involved in the dissemination of these peaceful messages but ALL those who have resources to do it.

It happens that the Saudis seem to have more of it at the present and therefore they are more visible than others.

It all goes back to the way the structure of funding of religious institution is organized under Islam.
And the truth is there is no system other than this: He who has the money controls what the mullahs say and preach.

The bottom line is the Quran cannot be changed and all who start teaching it seriously MUST come to the same conclusions: Children of Apes and Swine must be eradicated one way or another.
Sometimes people tend to blame so called Wahabism for all the ills deriving from Islam.

Nonsense.

Wahabism does not teach anything else that other forms of Islam do not.
According to purist Suni followers there aren’t any kings, or otherwise secular rulers only religious ones (Caliphs are first and foremost religious rulers) entitled to control Muslims and definite there mustn’t be any ‘ruling houses’, heirs, family inheritance and so on.
Because of this the Wahabism is hated by pure Muslims (like OBL).

But of course Muslim apologists identify Osama with Wahabism, which is wrong.
Here are some examples taken from Pali textbooks (Funded mostly by Iranian Shias)

From a Palestinian history textbook:
"Asma, Abu Bakr’s daughter, was my age when she played a role in supplying provisions and water and passing information about Kuraish [Tribe] to the Prophet and his companion during their secret Hegira [emigration] from Mecca to Medina.
What role can I play in order to support the national resistance movement against the occupier and colonialist?"
[History of the Arabs and Muslims, sixth grade, p. 34]

Music lesson anyone?
Lyrics for a Palestinian school song:
"Shake the earth, raise the stones.
You will not be saved, Oh Zionist, from the volcano of my country’s stones,
You will not be saved, Oh Zionist, from the volcano of my country’s stones,
You are the target of my eyes, I will even willingly fall as a Shahid [Martyr for Allah].
You are the target of my eyes, I will even willingly fall as a Shahid.
Allah Akbar, Oh the young ones".

And check what they teach in Egypt (one of the Arab states supposedly on friendly terms with Israel).
Palestine (including Israel) is a part of Egypt according to Egyptian primary school textbooks;

No one cares if you dislike or adore Southern Christians, just as long as you aren't doing anything harmful to express your hate or your love. If however you were to ship 10,000 books calling Southern Christians sub-human to yankee schoolchildren you might find yourself in difficulty.

Islam is a terrorist organization and should be criminalized as such.
No, not a "few bad moslem apples", not "moslem Extremists", not "Radical islam", just islam, period. It is a gutter religion of murder, slavery and bigotry.

What about the pre-school indoctrination about using a rock and a left hand to wipe their asses as Muhammad did?

Christianity teaches that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. And Christians spread the Gospel--the Good News--by means of preaching. The following shows the contrast:

"This religion arose through jihad and through jihad was its banner raised high. It is one of the noblest acts..."

So, while Christians spread the Word, they don't advocate genocide nor do they label those who are not Christians as monkey and pigs. Rather, Christians pray for their enemies.

It's one thing to preach that any religion is the one true way and quite another to wage brutal war until all the world has converted to Christianity.

Big difference! And the contrast between the lives and teachings of MTP and Jesus is a stark one.

Always:

Too many just don't understand the differences between the Meccan and the Medinan verses. The former are quoted over and over again by Islamophiles and apologists, but the Medinan verses were the later "revelation." Not enough were converting, so MTP changed his tune and tone.

Mark, I wish that more people would read your book, which really lays out what Islam is! The essay format is reader-friendly, and you use the Koran itself to make your points.

I'm so sorry it has taken me so long to reply to your response. As you know, I am under some pressure here (and have been for about seven weeks now); so my responses can be somewhat tardy. Again, I'm sorry.

People generally don't understand the differences between the Meccan and Medinan verses. That's the problem. When GWB calls Islam a 'religion of love' he refers to one without counterbalancing his views with the other. This is a great pity, because it makes him look foolish and gullible.

It is not 'fashionable' these days to criticize another for his culture, as we all know. This, too, is a pity, because we have Islam knocking on our door, only ready and willing and eager to take over. Without knowing the proper nature of Islam, and, it has to be said, being willing to recognize what's happening, and being willing to take the necessary steps to thwart its advance, we're all going to be in dire straights.

Notice how ready the other side are to criticize our culture. Strange, isn't it?

By the way, Always, thank you for being so complimentary about my book. I appreciate your kind words greatly.

Ducky, did you know that in England there is a law that reduces culpability in the case of a woman suffering from post-parteum depression? She had been suffering under that and clinical depression for years! The fact that her church and her husband both advocated prayer alone and having many children. I know because a friend of mine went to a church like that when she has bi-polar syndrome. Do you have any idea how much havoc was perpetuated by that? I believe in prayer, but we live in fallen bodies in a fallen world and we need to be realistic. Besides that case was isolated, while the arabs in Gaza are teaching thier children in school and home to kill as many Israelis as possible! Such as that woman who was running as a representative, whose 3 sons were slodeydopes! Sorry, no equivalancy here!

If you are talking about Fallujah, that so called "ranger" has been proven a liar, also with all those imbedded journalists do you really believe something that big wouldn't have come out with video? Come on all the news has is naked prisoners!
BTW-The Army says they don't have any records of said "ranger", oh and where are his fellows who were there? Someone would have been sickened enough to tell! Hmm?

mr. ducky doesn't have children so he doesn't understand the worry of parents. He has only his moral equivalence to leave to the world when he dies instead of descendants. He feels so sorry that all us poor stupid fools don't understand that islam is no worse or better than any of the rest. mr. ducky hasn't read the Hadiths of Bukhari or the Sirah, the biography of Mohammed by Ibn Ishaq so he can pontificate in sublime ignorance.

Ducky, all these wars you mention, and a few others you don't, such as southern Thailand and the Phillipines, have one thing in common. Obviously there are two sides fighting, but one side is always Methodist.

Odd isn't it, that wherever there's trouble in the world, the name of John Wesley always turns up?

Wesleyanism has bloody borders. But of course the Methodists aren't necessarily the instigators of the violence. It could be that everyone else victimises them.

That's it! There's a massive worldwide anti-Methodist conspiracy! And who do you think is behind it?

The Quakers of course!

Damn, Ducky. There was a brief period when I could measure the difference between your meager intellect and LoBrow's (of Savage Justice) lack of intellect. For a time, he was out-leftisting even you.

Not anymore. You're a full fledged reality denier now.
