The Maids Are Coming! The Maids Are Coming!

Note: Rarely do I write a personal post, but I want to announce what may turn out to be good news. The signs look good so far.

Ever since that miserable car accident last year—Never get rear-ended by a cabbie!—I’ve been unable to do my own housework. It’s all I can manage to get the laundry and the dishes done. We live rather primitively and have no dishwasher other than yours truly, so dishwashing here involves more than loading an appliance. Until I got laid up with this back injury, I didn’t realize just how painful standing over the kitchen sink could be.

Admittedly, the housekeeping situation here is very bad, so bad that last week The Merry Maids came to give an estimate and never called back to schedule a cleaning. I'm not surprised that I didn't get a return call because the representative contorted his face the minute he started looking around. Also, he would not commit as to exactly what day he would call back.

You ask, "Why doesn't your husband help you, AOW?" He tries to, but my husband is the Oscar Madison type; I attribute his abililty to ignore the necessity of housekeeping tasks to a combination of genetics and growing up with a live-in maid. In addition, he also has back problems, much more long-standing than mine; the same tasks which give my back fits give his back fits.

This morning, after waiting nearly a week for Merry Maids' return call, I contacted a different company, which seems to have consented to come here on Monday. Being a bit of a cynic, I’ll feel more reassured when the cleaning crew actually appears at my front door, in part because the representative did not actually come to look at the house. According to the company’s representative, the crew has four members, and I figure that within three hours, these ladies can get done what I absolutely must have done: kitchen, bathroom (Yes, only one), living room, and upstairs guestroom; they can leave my home office and the master bedroom alone, except for possibly vacuuming the carpet in the latter. The upstairs guestroom, usually closed off, simply must be freshened up because my mother-in-law will be paying us a visit in September. Even though she has Alzheimer’s and won’t remember much of anything about her accommodations here after she leaves, the daughter-in-law in me just can’t abide the thought of her staying in a room which has not been properly vacuumed and dusted.

At this time, I count the blessing of having a small, albeit quite old and a bit rundown, house with mostly hardwood floors. If the maids come as promised, four of them can put this house in order in a relatively short period of time. Come Monday evening, I hope to be a much happier person—even if my wallet takes a hit.

I can't believe Merry Maids was so rude as not to call back! Sheesh.
A back injury can have so many other effects besides pain and doctors visits
and all that- things we all take for granted- like doing the dishes- can become
impossible. Good luck AOW with this.

Raven,
As a nurse, you understand that agony that I suffer--both physical and mental. Looking at a dirty house is misery, and living in it is unpleasant. Thankfully, my allergies haven't acted up with all this dust and cat hair.

I'll never call Merry Maids again. They talked a good line on the phone, but the rep had a snooty attitude. I think he was hoping for a McMansion, though I told him ahead of time about the age and size of this house.

I hope you complain about MM to the local Better Business folks too. And to the national headquarters.

A thought- once you get your place picked up, hire some level headed teenagers to come by and help to keep it up. Teaches them good housekeeping skills, among other things!

a bad back is miserable, but a clean house is peaceful. But with three children and a dog that sheds enough fur to cover Nevada, I get what I can until the rugrats go through the room again.

I would LOVE to have a maid come once every few weeks, even once a month to clean ceiling fans, behind the entertainment center, all those places I hate to clean.

Back problems can be terrible and some back surgery has terrible consequences. I can only imagine what chronic back pain must be like. Prayers for both of you and good luck with the maid service. I hope they show up.

We have what we call a cabin on the river. We did the big house routine and it was a lot of work for nothing. I would much rather be here with the peace and quiet. We don't even have any service like merry maids. I would be lucky to find an individual.

Then I would be ashamed to ask her to do the work by herself.

I don't have a dishwasher either. Not because I wouldn't use one. I didn't want to give up the cabinet space for one.

I am to domestic what Patton was to conscientious objection, LOL.

For me, housekeeping means finally getting off my touchas and leaping into the fray in major sacrifice mode, which doesn't happen as often as it should, and I have to contend with a 7 room house + a kitchen and 2 full baths, all by my lonesome.

That said, if I had a back problem preventing me from what limited initiative I already have, I'd be in deep shirt.

Procrastinationwise, I almost am, anyway. :-)

Homeschooling is wonderful, but cleaning is in fits and starts! Worse, when my late and I married, he had a house and I had an apartment. Then my parents died, add another house. Have a marriage between 2 packrats(of different types except books), add 2 children. Right now I am trying to declutter, so everything gets worse before better! Add dog who sheds all over the state of Florida! Thank You, G*D, for terrazzo! I could cry...or pray for the Rapture! Then my back goes out, sigh...
I give! Getting teenagers or college students to come and clean is a good way to go, they make money the old fashioned way and your house will be human friendly again! Thank the Lord your allergies have behaved, that would definately be the breaking point!
Good morning, G*D bless and Maranatha!

Always:

You simply have to have a dishwasher! I could no more be without my dishwasher than I could be without my refrigerator or my computer. Simply put: It's a 'must have'!

As for the cleaning with a back problem, I can only sympathize. But may I suggest that after it is all cleaned up that you get a 'cleaning lady' in periodically, if only once a month. I think that would help you greatly.

I know how busy you are with homeschooling and blogging. You need to be kind to yourself. Treat yourself too the luxury of domestic help. You'll thank yourself for it; and you'll feel so much happier, too.

I have a dishwasher, AOW, and very rarely use it. Somehow, we seem to derive pleasure from washing dishes! That would not be the case if I had a back problem, however, and I don't envy you. It has to be miserable! :(

"Merry Mades" hunh? They sound more like spoiled brats to me... what do they do; only clean houses that don't need cleaning? Sheesh!

I hope the other cleaning team shows up and earns whatever money you have to pay them.

Duck,
Isn't it standard to have someone clean the place once a year?

Until my car accident, I did twice-a-year DEEP cleaning (June and December), and the usual regular maintenance in between. On doc's orders, my cleaning efforts have come to a mandated halt.

Nanc,
dear Lord, plucky - wtf is the matter with you? it stands to reason you only clean once a year...

Surely, surely, he meant hiring a cleaning crew to come in once a year! The alternative gives me the creepy-crawlies.

My mother was a consummate pack rat/slob, so I have developed a bit of OCD about clutter and crummy floors. The thought of not being able to vacuum... AHHH! Of course, with my beagle/sheltie mix dog, not much of the food that hits the floor via the kids stays there long! LOL!

I can't imagine how frustrating that must be to NOT be able to clean, or to have intractable back pain. I hope that it works out for you, AOW!

One of the things my church does for those who can't is weekly or monthly cleaning, free of charge. It's all part of ministry. Perhaps you could look into something like this?

At 8/25/2006 12:31 PM, Blogger Brooke said...

Oh, and you should definitely look into getting a portable dishwasher, if you have the space and budget for it. My house has a modest kitchen, and does not have a under-counter type. The portable is one of those things that will have you spoiled in NO TIME FLAT!

AoW- Stress tightens muscles! Do what you have to to feel normal in your house. A home maybe a man's castle, but if the queen ain't happy...it's your nest and an expression of who you are! It is worth the money and if you destress your back may heal faster! I have a portable dishwasher, makes a great island in your kitchen! You'll be glad you did and so will your back!

I don't think I'd stand a chance if I didn't have a dishwasher. I'd probably eat out a lot more or, as Ogre suggests, use a lot of paper plates -- hmmm, someone would also need to invent affordable, disposable pots and pans.

Raven,
I think that I'll indeed complain to Merry Maids. If they didn't want the job, the rep should have said so.

O Bob,
...with three children and a dog that sheds enough fur to cover Nevada...

No children here, but with these four cats, which shed like none I've ever seen, if I didn't broom-sweep once a day, I could easily have enough cat hair to stuff a mattress. Having hardwood floors helps with the fur control, but the dustpan gets filled up several times a week.

Debbie,
Most maid services here send out 3-4 in a crew because of all the McMansions.

Our house is small but CRAMMED. My family has owned this property since 1947. Picking up in preparation for the maids' visit has morphed into quite a task.

I'm just about ready to give up some cabinet space for a dishwasher. I need to get rid of the hidden junk anyway.

Ogre,
We don't use paper plates, but we DO use paper cups for most beverages. I can't imagine the dishwashing if I had to do glasses.

we could all come and destroy the place after the maids finished with it! :)

If you pay for another visit from the maids, you've got a deal!

Seth,
I am to domestic what Patton was to conscientious objection, LOL.

Quite the vivid analogy there.

For me, housekeeping means finally getting off my touchas and leaping into the fray in major sacrifice mode

When I wasn't working outside the home, I was a fastidious housekeeper. And I used to look forward into the twice-a-year massive cleaning-frenzies. Not any more.

A microwave is a sort of substitute for disposable pots and pans.

a 7 room house + a kitchen and 2 full baths

Wow! You have a lot of space. But I'll bet that I could fill up that same amount of floor space with what I've got crammed into this small house.

At 8/25/2006 6:00 PM, Blogger Always On Watch said...

Gayle,
I have a dishwasher, AOW, and very rarely use it. Somehow, we seem to derive pleasure from washing dishes!

I never used to mind doing dishes even though my kitchen sink doesn't have a window out of which to look--the windows in that portion of the house are way too high for me to see over the sills.

I checked with the maid company today, and they assured me they'll be here first thing Monday morning. Yee-haw!

Mark,
But may I suggest that after it is all cleaned up that you get a 'cleaning lady' in periodically, if only once a month. I think that would help you greatly.

Such is the tentative plan. Housework can have aerobic benefits, but the doc will have to lift the restrictions for me to get that form of exercise.

I know how busy you are with homeschooling and blogging.

The two activities take up the majority of my time.

I had to forego the usual blogging today in order to make start-up lesson plans and to run off the necessary copies.

TMW,
Right now I am trying to declutter

The clutter here really got out of control when my father died; I had to move so many things over to our place so as to rent out the house he had. And even so, I had to leave an antique desk, an antique vanity, a lathe, and a safe at Dad's house, which I rent out to family members, so the items are secure and well tended.

Brooke,
One of the things my church does for those who can't is weekly or monthly cleaning, free of charge. It's all part of ministry.

I haven't heard of a church in this area providing such a service.

I wish that I did have room in my kitchen for a portable dishwasher! TMW mentioned that it could be used as an island, but my kitchen is long and narrow; and the only available outlet is dead center, along one wall of the kitchen counter. The fellow who built this house did not design it for a woman's taste!

TMW,
Stress tightens muscles!

Yes, and maybe once this house is presentable, my back pain will ease off.

Benning,
Heal, Baby, heal!

Hold that thought!

The story of man moving dirt from here to there against the whirlwind, LOL. Ain't that the truth.

This is the first house I've ever owned, I'm used to one and two bedroom apartments in downtown areas (except a house I rented when I lived in P.R.), and the space, to me, is intense. I do all I can not to clutter it up, just so I can enjoy the space. :-)

Anonymous & Seth,
One of my mother's dearest friends used to say that she wanted a tent so that she could pack up every few months and leave the dirt behind. :)

Seth,
I truly believe that if we had more space, we'd be able to control the clutter. I realize that I'm delving into theory, if not into outright fantasy.

Mr. Beamish,
You write haiku?

I know, of course, that you occasionally write a sonnet (sort of):

I was enjoined to write a sonnet
For a high school English class
And had I not thought upon it
The task might have kicked my ass
"Ten more lines to write!" you say
And all within this parameter:
Rhyme eight lines a-b-b-a-a-b-b-a
And in iambic pentameter
But what about the rest
Can it be done
With such nuance?
Well sure,
but not quite so
Lest I become a bad influence.

TMW,
When I was a new bride, the house my late bought was small...

When my husband and I first got married, we rented my grandmother's little cottage, on the same lot as her "big house." For over nine years, we lived in The Little House, which consisted of two large rooms (a bedroom and a living-room/kitchen combo). No bathroom! Once my grandmother passed away, we moved into The Big House. Now, The Little House is a storage unit. It's crammed full!

Funny thing about that Little House...Originally it was a garage, then converted to a chicken brooder, and finally to an "efficiency apartment."

Our living in The Little House saved us loads of money. Also, my mother's mind was eased because someone was watching over my grandmother. My grandmother was the very independent type, and she never suspected that we were keeping an eye on her, and those short trips to her one bath allowed for us to watch her without being obvious about it; she always thought that she was doing my husband and me a favor. Which she was!

For a time, my teenaged cousin moved in with us. Talk about three's a crowd!

Which is a blessing really, methinks that's why my 2 have turned out so well, we aren't isolated from each other!
Yes, I iced yesterday! PTL, my knee was a bit of a worry, but it is so much better than yesterday. Now I have both shoulders a wrist and ankle talking, but it's more achy than "pain" pain. Slept well last night, so that was a factor I think in why I'm doing so well today!

The last time was at the Pinnacles inCA. walking down a steep path, thought I had broken my thigh, I think my scream of pain is still echoing in the mountains! LOL! But I had just pulled everything, like an all over charley horse! I know you are excited about getting that work done, it will be well worth the dineros for that sense of well being having a clean house again will give you! Enjoy!
Be praying for Morgan, MadZ,RetiredPreacher and I this week, please. We have some weather heading for us, especially Morgan.
Thanks!

AOW,

Haiku is one of my favorite forms of poetry. Just don't ask me to compose in Japanese.

AOW,

I'm coming over to your house next time I need a front end alignment LOL.

Mr. Beamish,
That would be quite a drive, so be sure you don't wear those front tires.

My husband would certainly do an alignment for our future President!

Mr. Beamish,
You should put a posting with a few of your haiku. And possibly add some of your art work.

I just finished watching the evening news. Definitely some weather headed your way!

The worst will be to the west, but we will be on the bad side. I think MadZ is south of me along with RetiredPreacher, but Morgan is up in Jacksonville! They may get the eye passing over them! Go to the National Hurricane Center site, you can get all sorts of interesting info!

Mr. Beamish,
Better not post any artwork for that particular haiku, especially if the artwork is of the before-and-after type. Hehehe.

Agreed. I have been referred to as "blunt AOW," but Mr. Beamish is even more so.

Nothing wrong with bluntness, in the right places and times. Personally I'd rather deal with blunt than sneaky!

TMW,
Forewarned is forearmed.

I well recall a few years back when we had to batten down the hatches for Hurricane Isabel. The Lord watched over us--felled trees and crushed cars everywhere, but not on our property.

We were out of electricity for a few days, but one of our neighbors had a portable generator, so our basement stayed dry because the sump pump was operational with that generator.

At 8/28/2006 1:32 PM, Blogger The Merry Widow said...

My son checked the generator this morning and it works great! But it looks like it will pass east and south of us now! At least 60% + chance, we're getting to betting odds now!
How's putty-tat doing? And have the maids arrived?

TMW,
Preliminary diagnosis for Cameo: abscess. She should be coming off the operating table about now.

The maids have come and gone. Wow! Best money I've spent in a long while. I recommend The Maids. Their rates aren't cheap (in this area, $128/hr for a crew of 4), but they get the job done.

I got to practice my Spanish with them. The team leader was truly bilingual and one of the crew nearly so. But the other three knew very little English.

Funny thing with the maids today...They were so surprised at (1) how small this house is and (2) the lack of a dishwasher.

HooYah! I'm so happy for you! Yeah it's expensive, but now it will be easier for a single person to care for it! And I know you feel better on 2 counts! Small house, probably didn't take that long and then you can fetch home putty-tat! Will she ever be surprised!

TMW,
HooYah! I'm so happy for you!

Thanks!

In order to keep expenses down, I had The Maids skip the dusting in our tiny and rarely used dining room. I'll dust it myself tonight or tomorrow. The Maids did the floor in the dining room, and Dusti, once released from confinement in the master bedroom, flopped down on the clean surface as if to say, "It's about time!"

I didn't have The Maids tackle the master bedroom; I have to put away too much stuff in there before any deep-cleaning is attempted.

Cameo will indeed be surprised when we bring her home. Unfortunately, she has to stay overnight at the animal hospital; the abscess was much larger than it first seemed, so she needs to stay in hospital for the night. We're scheduled to pick her up tomorrow at noon.

Poor baby! She will be glad to see you, then she'll probably pout for an extended length of time, especially with "The Collar"! Is she good at giving guilt trips? But you also have your house back, that should help!

TMW,
I have most of my house back. I didn't have The Maids clean my office or the master bedroom (My husband vacuumed the latter last night). Both my office and my office are very cluttered because I stashed some of my pick-up items in those rooms.

My husband came home early from work yesterday so as to see this beautifully clean house. By the time he got home, I had picked up the master bedroom; I told him not to look into my office. LOL.

Also, I need to dust the dining room. I had The Maids skip dusting in that room because I have so many breakables there--antique glassware which has been in my family for generations. Dusting the dining room is the easiest and most enjoyable housekeeping chores here.

I think I'm going to have The Maids come in every few months. The Maids couldn't get over how old and how small this house is.

If my budget allows, I'll ask for once a month. I never know about my fourth-quarter budget until I get the tuition payments from my homeschool group. Next time The Maids come (I can ask for the same team!), I'm going to have them wash the woodwork; I used to wash the woodwork once every two years, but I've been off that schedule since caregiving Dad in his last years, particularly once he was diagnosed as terminal in 1996 (He lived another 1.5 years after that diagnosis). Then there was the grieving and the estate to settle--those processes took about two years.

Cameo didn't mind the Elizabeth collar when we had her spayed. We'll see what the reaction is now. She may also have drainage tubes for me to attend to.

Cameo is not inclined to sulking or pouting. In the past, anyway. But she's never been this sick before.

AoW- Well, in that case she just may be happy to be relieved of the pain and feeling something is wrong! So glad you're happy with The Maids, what a relief for you! I'm going to e-mail you later, Donal had a great idea, so I will be contacting some folks!
Be well, be blessed!

AOW - I crowed with delight after reading your post as I have had similiar experiences with maid services and my Oscar-Madison-style husband who allowed things to pile up during bout with injury and illness during our long marriage. I feel for you.

Eleanor,
Many men are Oscar-Madison types. Right now, my husband is doing his best to be neat and tidy. I don't expect it to last long, however. He always reverts to type.

At 8/29/2006 5:40 PM, Blogger The Merry Widow said...

AoW- My late color coordinated the wire hangers and his shirts! He had them hung in threes, he complained early in our marriage that I didn't dust and vacuum everyday like his mother! My reply was, "I have a life." If he got to persnickety, I'd hand him the dustrag and told him to have fun! I didn't marry Oscar...

I wasn't either! He relaxed after the children arrived! He was more concerned with their wellbeing than his shirts! He had his heart in the right place! I still miss the rat, he's still going to get a kick in the seat of the pants for bugging out! LOL!

VERY! I was so blessed by G*D to have that man in my life. I learned alot and was encouraged to grow into what G*D designed me to be. We were married for 5 weeks less than 15 yrs., not long enough! And Thanksgiving still isn't our favorite holiday, he died the day after! But he was home with his family and beloved pets, so that was good! It took us about 3 yrs. to get our heads screwed on straight again. To few good Christian men out there, each one's a treasure to be cherished!

TMW,
Losing a loved one around a holiday is so difficult! I lost my mother a few weeks before Thanksgiving, and that holiday has never been the same since. For one thing--not the most important aspect, of course--Mom always cooked the Thanksgiving meal for the extended family. Nobody could cook like Mom!

One of our dear friends died from brain cancer on Thanksgiving Day itself. The family has never recovered. His widow makes sure to go on a little trip for Thanksgiving week.

Another of our dear friends lost her brother in a car accident on Christmas Eve. His car was loaded with presents. My friend's brother had only recently come to the Lord, and this was to be his first Christmas as a Christian living a sober life. The family has never resumed the Christmas Eve celebration often observed in the South--opening presents the evening of Christmas Eve. BTW, my friend's brother died some 30 years ago. The grieving still continues.

In my experience, the grief never ends. It just gets more bearable.

You had less than 15 years with your husband? Not long enough!

few good Christian men out there, each one's a treasure to be cherished!

So true. Some of my single friends often complain a bit about that.

Fortunately my daughter, Daddy's girl par excellance, has been able to develope a good relationship with me! She was pretty much his clone in temperment and personality. The 2 of them were born on the same wavelength, it was spooky! But now she has a tight relationship with me, so I have 2 close children, no favorites! Though each is convinced the other is my favorite! LOL!

tmw
P.S. Without G*D we would be in horrendous shape and seperated from each other emotionally!

AOW - My hubby is dyed-in-the-wool Oscar-Madison type and considers housework to be unnecessary, a waste of time and efffort and is happy with piles around the house. However, no one should disorganize his sports equipment...

At 8/30/2006 1:11 PM, Blogger Always On Watch said...

Eleanor,
My husband allowed our back yard to pile up so badly (automotive "stuff") that our yard was cited by the County as an automotive graveyard. As he didn't allow me to interfere with his automotive items, the burden fell on him to remove the material before legal proceedings were instituted. He will need to take care of some remaining clutter before the trees, screening shrubs, and vines shed their leaves this fall. I still think that we could be cited if the inspector drives by again.

My housework deems that housework is necessary when the ants invade or when he starts tripping over things as he walks in the dark.

But I have to admit that I'd rather live with Oscar Madison than with Felix Unger!

TMW,
You are indeed blest of the Lord to have such a close relationship with your daughter, especially since she was so close to her father!

When I was growing up, one of my classmates had a close relationship with her father; she and her mother butted heads a lot, primarily because of that reason. But in a few years, my classmate found the Lord, and from then on, she and her mother (an alcoholic) established a truce which lasted until her mother passed away a few decades later.

At 8/30/2006 3:09 PM, Blogger The Merry Widow said...

AoW- I had a close relationship with my adoptive Father which caused head butting between my adoptive Mother and myself, then she accepted the Lord 12 yrs. before she died, then we had a Mother-Daughter relationship. So I am very happy that my daughter and I can do things together and enjoy each others company!

Today Sept. 14, I caught Merry Maids in fraud. I pay for two hour cleanings. Today, I took the day off. They arrived at 9:00 so I figured I'd split so they could work without me in the way. I stopped back to my house at 9:50 and they were gone. I was furious. My house was no that messy so they should have had time to clean behind the bed, wipe the counters down, wipe the top of the fridge down, and other little things. Instead, I got the "Once over lightly. . . ." treatment. Me thinks I'll need to pursue legal action if I don't get a free cleaning.

Matt,
Thank you for stopping by Always On Watch.

Your comment made me glad that Merry Maids turned me down!

In fact, Merry Maids insisted that I paint the interior of the house before they'd even consider coming in.

I've been quite satisfied with the service which The Maids has provided. Their web site is linked in my posting.

I hope that you get that free cleaning!

A few years ago i was hit by a car and injured my back this caused me so much pain it was ruining my life and then i tried one of those mattresses that mould to your body shape and adjust to your weight and i slept great for the first time in months and woke with no pain at all! You should try it!
